This year, national elections in Wales and Scotland, and regional and local elections across England will provide us with key insight into the scale of the challenge for environmentalists come 2029. Electoral success for Reform UK threatens to reverse the significant climate achievements the Labour movement has delivered. And Labour’s record – even just nearly 2 years into their term – is momentous.
This environmental progress must be defended, explained and rooted in everyday concerns about jobs, bills, health and security on the doorstep. That is why SERA has created Ground Truth, our flagship grassroots campaign to promote Labour’s environmental achievements and counter the threat of Reform.
Ground Truth provides Climate Outreach training on the dos and don’ts for effective conversations with voters about climate and nature, with SERA working with participants to apply these to national and local environmental achievements. Following a Ground Truth event, SERA produces tailored resources to support local election canvassing.
This year, Ground Truth has been so far delivered:
- In Cardiff – where we were joined by local Cllrs Huw Thomas, Jackie Jones and Caro Wild and Huw Irranca-Davies, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Member for Climate and Rural Affairs, alongside local activists, and
- Online with a focus on the Gorton and Denton byelection.
Our aim is to roll out Ground Truth nationwide. Please get in touch at organiser@sera.org.uk if your CLP wants to learn how to best defend Labour’s environmental progress and bold agenda, or if you want to be added to our Whatsapp campaign group for sharing experiences and support.
