SERA & Mainstream Contemporary Motion

Across the country, campaigners and communities have spent years exposing the failures of the privatised water system from sewage pollution and environmental damage to rising bills, mounting debt and failing infrastructure. This includes our own campaign for the 2024 general election ‘Stop the Sh*tshow’, led by SERA President Feargal Sharkey. These efforts have transformed water into one of the defining political issues of our time, with growing calls for public ownership as the only lasting solution.

This year, there is a real opportunity to progress the call for public ownership of water under Andy Burnham’s leadership and we want to make sure he knows that he has the Party’s support to do so. To that end, SERA has been working with Mainstream to develop a contemporary motion for Labour Party Conference on public ownership of water. This needs to be passed and submitted by your CLP by 17th September.

The motion can be accessed here: Contemporary motion

The goal is to get CLPs across the country to submit the motion and we need your help to do that. Could you please share the motion with your CLP and ask them to support it? The deadline for submission of motions to Conference is 17th September. Please let me know if you have any questions about the motion or process.
