The Road to Copenhagen - the progressive case for climate action: new SERA pamphlet

Category: Homepage, Climate Change

European left join together to call for an ambitious deal on climate change

Foreign Secretary David Miliband and International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander have joined forces with centre left politicians from across Europe, to publish a SERA pamphlet putting pressure on the world’s leaders to reach an international agreement at Copenhagen.

Without a deal, the economy and international security as well as the environment could be at risk, they argue.
As this crucial summit fast approaches, David Miliband argues that without a deal in Copenhagen, the economy and international security as well as the environment could be at risk: “A deal in Copenhagen is in danger; and the greatest danger of all is that amidst the competing priorities of economic recovery, Afghanistan and nuclear non-proliferation, we fail to see the problem until it is too late…Global warming may not be on the UN Security Council agenda now, but it will in the future if we do not wean ourselves off carbon.”

Douglas Alexander MP, Linda McAvan MEP, Elena Espinosa (Spanish Minister for the Environment), and many others also contribute. The pamphlet is edited and introduced by Rachel Reeves (Labour’s parliamentary candidate in Leeds West) and Andrew Pakes (Labour’s parliamentary candidate in Milton Keynes North).
